I was on my back from Hardees this morning after purchasing a bacon and cheese biscuit (no egg) for my breakfast. I noticed when I drove past my old high school that the cars in the student parking lot were a lot nicer than the cars we had when I graduated.
My junior year I got a 1986 Chevy Spectrum. My first car. I paid $1400 for it. Well, I paid $700 and my dad paid the other half. But it was my car. And I loved it so so much. It was a little four door sedan, the color of maroon. The backdoors didn't open from the outside. In fact, there were no door handles on the backdoors at all. For one to get into the backseat, I had to roll down the back window, pull on the inside handle and pull the door open.
I just realized I never made out in the backseat of that car. And I just realized why. Too much work.
My hubcaps were always falling off and I have no idea why. One day, I was leaving school and walking to my car. It had snowed a few days before so there was a mound of it in the corner parking lot. On top of that mound rested my hubcap, looking very proud at the rest of the parking lot. I merely got in my car, the front doors open just fine, and pulled out of the lot. I am thinking when I pulled in the lot that morning it just flew off and I didn't realize it.
Another time I was driving down the road and it was raining. I turned my windshield wipers on and one of them literally broke in half and went flying from the car. Thank goodness it was from the passenger side and I was still able to use the one on the driver side.
Anytime I took the Spectrum on interstate if I went above 55 MPH, the whole thing would shake.
One time, I had just washed her and was taking her down to the library to read a spell. I parked and some guy in a big ass truck backed right into her. I got out and there was a huge dent in the back door. I told him not to worry about it.
A year later I sold that little car. A week after that I saw it sitting in front of the Sav-A-Lot grocery store. Someone had put a damn gray door on where the dent had been. That made me mad.
Anyway, back to the reason for this, the cars in the lot this morning looked a lot nicer than my '86 Chevy Spectrum but you know something? I wouldn't have traded that car in for the world.
